My Favourite Hongkong Cafe - Kim Gary

My Blog Title says is all! Kim Gary is my favourite Hongkong Cafe in Singapore! Second will be Hongkong Cafe at Novena. Sad thing is its location is quite inconvenient for me to get there. I happen to be at Vivocity yesterday, and the queue for Kim Gary was disgustingly longggg... Probably one have to wait for 45min just to get in... this is crazy and I will never do that!

These were eaten during my Internship period at HP, which means these photos are about 1 month plus old... -_-

Beef Egg Sandwiches - I have a very heavy breakfast - 2 breakfast in fact, so i ordered sandwich for my lunch. I like the way the beef is cooked, still chewy and tender. This is so simply yet so good. But the best Beef Egg sandwich I had was in Jusco, Johor.

E ordered this, I think its Nissin Noodles... veryyyy big and verryy cheap... I tried the soup, and its actually not as spicy as it looks, and its pretty good.

There was some promotion going on during that period, so there was a special menu! The menu namely consist of French Fries or Mushrooms served in different styles. French fries is a no-go for me, so poor E has to eat muchroom with me. lol.

This Mushroom dish consist of (other than mushrooms), silken tofu ( 2 big slabs) with lots of cheeseeeee... yum. This dish turn out as a surprise as we did not expect it to be so nice, after all the ingredients used are normal.

E ordered Yuan-Yang ( a beverage of coffee and milk tea), I don't want consume any calories from drinks, but the server gave us a one more extra... *evil grinz*, which means i got it for free! I had a sip, and the rest was for E!

City Square JB

This is not exactly in City Square, but its in its vicinity. This Kopi Tiam that is very near to City Square is famous for its Chee Cheong Fun Yong Tau Fu. Very few sg'reans eat in this place bcos it stinks, it stinks of something and it just dun look too pleasant... but just tahan abit... for the sake of good food! THE FAMOUS IPOH ZHU CHANG FEN among the locals!
The Chee Cheong Fun is unique, as it is served with yong tau hu liaos(4). After you choose your liaos(4) already, the towkay will chopped them up, cooked them, and serve them with the Cheong Fun, and served with 2 sauces, curry gravy or sweet sauce... I chose mixed... It might look abit messy, but its really nice, nice not cos its unique, but nice "nice".
4.6 / 5.0

Now inside city square...
went to this cafe called Wong Kok HK cafe... (just realized that SG also have one in Bugis Junction today, therefore this review will be applicable in SG too!)

It was so cold there... heng first came was a hot cup of Almond Tea with Egg White! Strong taste of almond infused with a tinge of tea, mixed with egg whites... wonderful !
4.5 Almonds /5.0 Almonds

2nd was ham and cheese sandwich... nothing spectaular... just like the normal breakfast I have every morning...
2.5 Ham / 5.0 Ham

3rd came Sausage Pita drizzle with mayonaise and teriyaki sauce! omg... sinful... so i scrapped of those thick layers of mayo and teri sauce... eat the sausage and abit of the Pita... so so..
2.5 Pita / 5.0 Pita

4th dish is the main dish! Seafood Baked Spagetti in twin sauce! The twin sauce refers to Cheese and Tomato sauce... i tink. The thick crusty cheese... so generous of them! thanks! something unique is that they actually add abit of curry powder... first time in my life i ate cheese baked with currry powder, and surprisingly, it goes so well with the cheese and tomato! wonder if the SG outlet also have or is it just M'sia. The fish and Crabstix and was generous man, SG one....? no idea...

4.2 Cheese/ 5.0 Cheese

Dessert! Last one... Peach Bread Pudding. Usuallu bread pudding, taste like bread, or at least have the texture of bread, and i was expecting some bread-like thingy. But, when i have the first bite, It taste more like Egg Pudding than anything else...even thou so... i still like it! haha. The texture is kinda thick, with a strong peachy taste, and sprinkled with raisins. I really like this "bread" pudding, alot of eggy taste, and as u noe.. i love eggs!

Saturaday Dinner @ HongKong Cafe Express @ Eastcoast Park

Pan Fried Dumpling - I tot this was one of the better Dumpling i ever eaten. Usually its the Xiao Long Bao that got the soup inside the dumpling, but this one has it too! The proportion of Skin and Filling was just nice....justttt nice.

Their Famous X.O Carrot Cake - Damn freaking oily la i must say... but good thing is it came in a small plate, so need not chomp down too much lipids! Unlike normal carrot cake, it is fried until each piece is cripsy outside, and soft and mashy inside, then i think its sprinkled with some seasoning, giving each bite a burst of spiciness.

Seafood E-Fu Noodle - Arh....too bad this came in a portion a little too small la... Don't judge this dish based on its name! Unlike normal hawker selling Horfun, this E-Fu churned up by this cafe is great! A must try!

Waited 30+min for this Mango King to arrive! Think they forgot all about it! Only when i say i wan to pay my bills already then they serve us this! Was so hungry and thirsty by then, tt i forgot to snapped a picture of its glory, with the mango ice cream floating on top, dressed with a little whipped cream. Inside is also suspended with some Mango-taste jellies. Very refreshing after a oily meal.

Victors's Kitchen

Victor's Kitchen! From what i heard, they serve authentic HongKong Dim Sum! No more Dimsum wanna-bes! Variety wise is very limited, almost all the dim sums they sold are already on this blog! Although they lose out in quantity, Quality wise, Victor beats Yum Cha flat. Needless for me to explain how good they are, The pictures below shows all.

Chinese Tea served in non-standardised mugs
Scallop Dips & Chilli Sauce

Milk Custard Bun

First time ate Milk Custard Bun, and 6 out of 8 people of the table loves it. I find if okay thou, fairly good!

4 Custards / 5 Custards

Chee Chiong Fan with Prawn

The Prawn is very BIG and very juicy, the prawn "juice" burst on the first bite. The Chiong Fan Skin veryvery smooth that can slides down your throat, but thick (unlike the usual thin kind). The Gravy is not saltish, so light yet so good. Ordered around 6 of this!

4.5 Chiong Fan / 5.0 Chiong Fan

Glutinous Rice with Chicken

The Glutinous rice wraps a very generous amount of chicken meat, chinese sausages. It is steamed to perfection, not too dry. The Rice is very fragrant with the aroma of the Pandan leaves.

4.5 Glutinous Rice / 5.0 Glutinous Rice

Spare Ribs

Taste very normal, nothing special, but its nice nevertheless.

3.7 Ribs / 5.0 Ribs

XO sauce Carrot Cake
The Carrot cake is so soft yet quite chewy. Each bite has a pretty strong taste of carrots. we ordered like 5 of these! Good Stuff!
4.6 Carrot / 5.0 Carrots

Fried Wantons

I never tried this, cos its fried and looks normal to me. But from what i heard from the rest, they say its good. I should think its good. Go try to find out! :)

Siew Mais

I think the Siew Mais are pretty normal, the small size type. Nicer than NTUC and many of those Buffet Siew Mais, but its certainly not the best ive eaten. But i have to say, its above average la...

4.0 Siews / 5.0 mais

Fried Spring Rolls

Usually i don't like spring rolls, because they are deep fried, and they taste pretty much the same. I had the first bite, and oh my! Its crispy to the right amount on the outside, and the fillings in the inside was so tasty! I cannot really tell whats inside, but BIG juicy prawn was found inside again! My 2nd bite I dipped it with the specially prepared vinegar, and it now taste even better! So i had my 3rd, 4th 5th..yadayada.... and up up those calories!

4.6 Spring / 5.0 Rolls

Chicken Feet

The chicken feet is simmered in a very nice sauce with Tau Pok. Those who do not dare to eat the Chicken Feet for fear of those "feets" can eat the Tau Pok underneath it! The Tau Pok is very yummy after sponging up the sauce. For those who dare to eat feets, lucky you, the feet is cooked so well that the skin detaches away from the bone so easliy, and the sauce has already simmered into the skin.. yums... we had about 4 or 5 of these!

4.3 chicken feets / 5.0 Chicken feets

Har Gow

My Favourite dish of all! Each Har Gow envelopes 3 of those BIG JUICY Prawns! So each Bite gives you 3 bursts of Prawn "juice". Ahh... this is heavenly! DIE DIE MUST EAT and MUST EAT ALOT!

4.8 Har Gow / 5.0 Har Gows

Beancurd Skin wrapped (forgot the name)

This is pretty ok for me..but the rest likes it. Dipped into the special sauce for best effect!

4.0 / 5.0

Some dumpling (forgot the name again)

Well, we ordered only one of this, and this is the first and last. Nothing worth mentioning, a lot of meat fillings inside, but nothing great, and those who ate it agrees too!

3.0 / 5.0

Char Siew Bao

I never eat this cos its just char siew bao. No one mentioned that its good, so once again, i guess its just normal.

Soya Milk vs Cows' Mlik

Found the 2 healthiest Milk of each category (let me know if there's better choices out there!)
: Cow and Soya! Healthy in the context that it has the highest protein per 100ml, lowest sugar, and low fat, and low in calories.

The winner for Cows' Milk is none other than HL fresh Milk (Plain),

and for the Soya category is the new NutriSoy Omega Soya Milk (No Sugar Added).

HL Milk (Plain)

50 kcal
5g Protein
1g Fat
5.3g Carbs per 100ml

NutriSoy Omega No SugarAdded Soya Milk

39kcal
4g Protein
1.8 Fats
1.8 Carbs

With all these healthier alternatives, sometimes i just wonder how come consumers do not want to switch to these healthier choices rather than those loaded with plenty of fats and sugar? Why not just spend some time and effort to look at the nutritional information before making your purchase. They are there for a reason! But many people still choose based on which taste the best, which one is the cheapest... Price wise its just a few cents more expensive, so it shouldn't be an issue. A simple decision like this will save you from consuming
unecessary fats and sugar, save yourself from running an extra mile, or another 30min in the gym.

SO folks! Not only should you eat responsibly, you should buy responsibly too!

JB: Jusco: Food n Tea (Revisit 2)

Yup yup! I did went back to JB, but for 2 reasons! First was to go back to this HK cafe which i mentioned in my previous post! and as for the second reason, hmmp..i shall not mention here... heh.
Beef Slices in "Siew Chap" sauce, and braised tofu
First to be served was this, and i cheena pok ordered this! The beef as usual was good, soft and juicy. I really think come to this place, you gotta try their beef dishes. The rice was untouched though, as im not a ricey person, but i ate it with vermicelli instead! below!
Fried Vermicelli in "XO" sauce
This was the "want-to-try" dish which i mentioned in my previous post! Its pretty good, taste better than most fried vermicelli, but its supposed to be fried with "XO", but cant taste any "XO" sauce at all! But what can i expect from the amount i pay...
Shanghainese Fried Rice with Chicken Cutlet
I did not tried this, but it looks pretty normal to me, so i guess it should taste pretty normal too.
Baked Rice in Twin Sauce (Red is Tomato, and White is Cream sauce if im not wrong)
JJ ordered this, and he looks expressionless when eating this, so i guess theres nothing fantastic...
Thick Toast with Kaya and Peanut Butter
Just like my previous entry, just that there's additional kaya this time round. Taste wise, Kaya and peanut butter compliment each other pretty well. But bette check your cholesterol levels after eating this consecutively a few times...

Mango "Tong Shui"

Its not very sweet, meaning no sugar is added to enhanced the flavour. So the taste is purely from the mango itself. Very refreshing and light to the stomach.

Plum Juice with Sprite

Wanted to try something special, so tried this! A very refreshing and cooling mix.

Mango Custard

The Pastry is like those "man tou" that we dipped with chilli crabs gravy, but the interior is filled with mango cutard. The mango custard taste is not stong strong enough, but the "Kou Gan" is good! It should be better if fresh mango puree is used instead of custard!

JB:Jusco: Food n Tea

absolutely LOVE THIS PLACE! and im going back again tomorrow! i kinda suck at describing food from some feedback i get... haha...which i couldn't agree less. my vocab for describing food very limited larh... but words can be beautiful even thou the food suck. so why not just trust what i say!? If i say its good, it means its good! haha... its bad...means please don't ever try!

In order to try this Hongkong Cafe, you got to travel to Johor Bahru - Jusco Shopping Center. But its worth the trip! Here's some pictures for you!

Restoran Food & Tea

There it is... located at the last level of Jusco. Wondering why there are so many M'sia flags hanging around the place when Sg National day is coming soon!

Greeted by this banner before entering!

Ice Milk-Tea with Chin-Chow

A simply beverage, but the tea aroma is strong, not convered by the sweetness of the milk.

Black Pepper Beef Udon

This dish is sooo oily that you can see a thick layer of oil at the bottom of the plate. The Black Pepper gravy is black-pepperish enough, and the Beef is still succulent and juicy.

Beef Sandwich (MUST TRY for sandwich lovers!)

This got to be my favourite! Simple yet so good! Between the bread, you can find a few pieces of hot, thick and juicy beef slices and the interior of the sandwich is coated with butter. The first bite reveals the still sizzling hot and juicy pieces.

Butter Toast with Honey and Peanut Butter

This is a must try in all Hongkong cafes. Between the Bread is spread generously with peanut butter. The whole bread is fried and then coated with honey and butter. After frying, the inside will be a mess of watery peanut butter.

See how oily it is... but its definitely worth those calories.

This is what i want to try on my next visit! Mocha with oats! See how beautifully its done!

Fried Vermicelli in 'XO' sauce! snapped from the menu, and this is another dish i would love to try!

Wan Chai Hong Kong Tea Room

Initally wanted to go IMM to eat the Peanut Ice Kacang which Hao brought me last time. But, when i reached there, no cravings for it... so ended up in a HK Restaurant instead! It was a right move! haha...
Wan Chai Hong Kong Tea Room 03-55
Probably the crowd speaks for itself!

Egg Bread with Maple Syrup and Butter!!

The Bread nicely coated with egg, the maple blends in so well with the bread, the butter, too much thou, so removed them after taking this photo! But the whole package is so yummy! Toast Box is nothing compared to this!
4.2 Bread / 5 Bread

Steamed Rice with Egg and Beef

Very light, the gravy is not too thick so you won't get sick eating it. The beef nicely cooked to the right texture. Its taste is nothing extraordinary, but it gives you the homely feeling.

4.5/5

Signature Hor Fun

This Hor Fun is supposed to be their signature dish. But, was kinda dissapointed in it. The Kway Teow is chewy and QQ, Portion is big. Fish slice is thick, prawn is quite fresh, still got 2 mussels! but... it lacks something, it just doesn't feels right.

3 Kway Teow /5 Kway Teow
