Rojak - Soon Heng

***WALL OF FAME***

Rojak with cuttlefish @ $2.
51 on the box? That's the queue number!

I used to grow up eating Rojak from this place wat before it is relocated to HDB. Before this, this stall located at a coffee shop at Blk 177 Toa Payoh Central, where you can find the very famous goreng pisang as well. Hence, my Rojak standard bar is pretty high, and ever since then, i have yet to try any rojak that is better or on par with this.

Getting a good packet of rojak in Singapore now needs queue number too! From the "queue" (actually the queue is invisible because of the number system, and everyone gets scattered everywhere), you can more or less anticipate this stall to whip up a at least decent packet of rojak. And yes, they do whip up very nice rojak for minimum of just $2.

Why is this nice then?!?

I think making rojak really needs skill and Soon Heng has it! The prawn psate sweetness is splendid and well-balanced, and the amount of peanut bits is so generous that the whole packet is just covered with it...*slurpz*, and the "You Tiao" is very crispy as well.

Come try it and add on to their every growing Queue! lol

Sunday Lunch - Macaroonssss make me loon loon looney

My previous buys from Amande - Strawberry, Orange, Chocolate, Almond, Kiwi

I went there again for some cheap macaroons at only $1.20 each... cheaper relative to other macaroons la... dun compare to ice kacang or what k. this time round they have many many new flavours... but impossilbe for me to try all cos there are simply too many! I got myself Passionfruit, Chocolate Mint, Blueberry, Hazelnut and Cheese! Personal favorit is Hazelnut and chocolate Mint.

Geez, went to the gym today for only 30min =\

But these macaroons are really nice, but but i am also getting kinda sick of them at the same time. maybe i should try the Othellos and Batons from them in the future!

Singapore Bakery and Confectionary

Singapore Bakery and Confectionary

A very old school Bakery. I remember during those days when i was younger (when i was still a cute white chubby primary school kid, lol), the aroma of the freshly baked bread never fails to attract my attention every morning.

My Primary school school used to stand just directly opposite this bakery, but now it has shifted to somewhere in Tampines. I have not bought anything from them since the 90s, and I was pleasantly surprised that this shop is still operating till now, everything remains more or less the same. They used to bake bread using coal-fired ovens, I am not sure if they still do, but i am very positive that no one does that anymore.

When I got there, the shop is already closing although it is only 3pm. There are not much bread left. Their very superrrrr soft and nice bread loaves (those that are used for making Kaya toast) are already all gone by then. But luckily, there is something left for me still. =)

Tada! Its a normal looking cream-roll that is not really normal, because the texture and taste is so different from those that are mass manufactured by Gardenia or other bakeries

the top layer has a very nice texture, somewhat firm. But the interior is so soft and fluffy like cotton! Sandwiched between the cottony bread is a thin layer of cream. The cream is not those homogenous cream we usually see in other cream rolls, it has some precipitates of sugar crystals suspended within it (sounds so engineering...haha, but i cant think of a better description for it) , giving it a very nice crunchy feeling while sicking your teeth into it!

Super Uber Nice Muffins - Bliss Haven

Super Uber nice Muffins spotted!

Bliss Haven - World's 1st Fortune Muffin!

wth is a fortune muffin? You know fortune cookies? Those cookies with a slip of paper in it with a msg that "tells" your fortune? Fortune muffins uses the same concept, just that the the paper is now in a muffin instead, or to be exact, its at the bottom of the muffin.

I don't think they need to employ such a marketing gimmik for their muffins are already good enough to attract the attention of muffin lovers. The vicinity of the shop smells of freshly baked muffins, anyone with a "working" nose will not be able to resist this temptation...

Each muffin cost $1.20, and buy 5 you will get one free. (That's y you see the free one in the picture kena squeezed until so poor ting, free ma)

And they come in 6 Flavour - Cheese & Chicken Ham, Oreo Cookies, Raisin & Orange Peel, Banana & Walnuts, Chocolate and Blueberry.

Chocolate - The crust/top is really veryyy good. I wish there's more chocolatey rice in it as well as on it...

Banana & Walnuts - This is the best in my opinion. Generous slices of bananas and walnuts... and wach bite gives you some crunchiness and sweetness...

Oreo Cookies - See the hugh chuncky Oreos sticking out from the muffin! If you find it too little, you can always buy your own oreos, break it to pieces and stuffed it in.

Overall: The muffins are nice and cheap and big!!! They have been featured in the Straitstimes before, but that doesn't matter, what matters is now that are featured by me! haha. Like what they say,

Muffins will never be the same again!

My Pre-BirdDay and Home Made Moon Cake

My Bird Day is coming, but haven't come. But treat has come. Also good for me.
Cos treat = free food. This Guy named Guy-Dar in the Monkee Tee Shirt treated me Botak Jones! Well... I chose the place though I have been here like a thousand times!!!... This place is cheap, but not when you order a lot! HAHA

Lotsa cheesezzzz Sandwich - A sandwich made with lots of cheese! Cheddar cheese, mozarella cheese and parmesan! 3 cheeses melted into one. I chose those, cos i love cheese! The cheese is nice, but it will be nicer if they are more generous with the amount... and the tip to eat this is... eat while its hot! If its cold, its all hardened, and the the shiok factor drop by a factor of 5.

MS ate this... Botak Burger!
she likes the patty, and so do i... I like the smokey smokey taste... Side dish was Corn on a cob and Spicy Fries...

Some Beef sausage... So Big la... and its very juicy inside... I cannot tell the difference between beef and pork sausage. Any guru can teach me? They taste the same leh...

My main! All time my favourite. Cajun Chicken. Its th healthiest amongst all, for its chicken breast, good for my post work-out that day! heh. and its not oily... its thick and filling too! The sides were Mexican rice and Pasta Salad. Both of which were so-so...

Treater ordered the same thing as me, but his sides was spicy fries and coleslaw....u so boringgggg... haha!

The above was eaten yesterday!

and today... not related to my Pre - bird day

I got home-made mooncake from Biaos, someone whom I met over the forum and goes to the same gym as me! Thanks Biaos for the wonderful snow skin mooncake! Immediately after my gym, I took half a mouthful so that I can take a nice shot of it! Inside is white lotus, but it has a nutty flavour... i wonder why... and it also have yolk taste.. thou i dun see any round yolk...

one more left! nice!

Benny Western Food @ Toa Payoh

Benny 5 Star Western - "Best Food 2007", so is it still nice in 2008? I shall check it out...

Not much customers... am i making a wrong choice?

The choices on their menu is pretty limited, perhaps they do what they are best at, rather than being a jack of all trades and master of none! The recommendation was actually Cheesy Pork Cutlet, but this is so similar to the one I had in Taiwan - Cheesy Pork, so i ordered something else instead!

Chicken Cutlet with Mango Sauce, served alongside with Mashed Potatoes @ $6

I am not a big fan of chicken cutlet, as i prefer chop over cutlet, but this chicken cutlet is nicely fried such that the juicy and tender chicken meat is wrapped with a thin crispy layer that does not stick to the meat. The mango sauce helps to add some "natural" sweetness to the meat, instead of the usual mayonaise or ketchup.

Braised Lamb Shank @ $9.90

The lamb shank comes as a big surprise because i wasn't expecting a stall in a kopi-tiam to churn out such a fine dish! The meat is tender and infused with the flavours of the herbs, so rich, dense and creamy! But do not expect a super-size-shank like those in Secret Recipe. For just $9.90... is there anything to complain? :)

Mashed Potatoes - This is served with the lamb shank. FyI, the mashed potatoes is really made from potatoes, boiled and mashed! It is not those that simply add hot water into the powdered form... It has bits of bacons inside as well, and also cheese!

Benny is definitely a place for cheap and good food. I suspect that there are very few customers probably because of its location...damn ulu! On top of that, the service is excellent for a kopi tiam. If I were to go back again, i will probably just go back for the lamb shank, but its a pity that most food are deep fried!

Botak Jones @ Toa Payoh

My second time eating at Botak Jones, with my virgin attempt at the Clementi outlet. This time round ate at the Toa Payoh outlet... Food is good, place is good. Unlike the kopitiam at Clementi which is hot and stuffy, the one at Toa Payoh is actually in a industrial park canteen, very spacious and airy. On top of that, you get the one and only brew ski jones which is a bar operated by Botak Jones... and on top of that... there was live music - saxaphone and keyboard by some ang mo lang, not thruout the whole day of cos.... probably certain time of the day only, and im the lucky one.

Mustard for anything, Malt Vinegar for chicken, Steak sauce for the beef

Fish and Chips - Their Fish is crispy on the outside, and stil moist inside

Cajun Chicken with additional sunny-side-up and bacon - Chicken breast meat to provide me with all the proteins i need after my workout! :) but steamed one will be better of cos... well... there are days to indulge!

Botak Burger - Supposed to be their signature dish, but i never eat before... hm.. maybe got la... one bite... not bad... but dun really like the cheese, it might look cheesy, but the taste aint strong enuff...

Fries - Their fries are very nice... the exterior has a thin layer of crisp, sprinkled with chilli powder, inside still moist. I rmb last time the fries wasn't that good. Seems like their standard has improved alot... probably due to stiffer competition from the increasing "ang mow food in heartlands" like the one in Bishan - Crazy Ang Mo...i wanna try tt someday.

Heard tt now all the outlets, the food are pre-prepared at a central kitchen, therefore the standard in all outlets are more or less than same, which means is better than last time. Portion wise has greatly reduced due to complains of wastage of food, as they used to serve gigantic amt of french fries... but why did they reduce the size of the patty too! complain!

Saturday Breakfast at Coffee Bean - HDB Hub

The sausage was tasteless, but taste healthy... hah! Scrambled egg was well done. I like the toast with the jam. Cranberry Salad lacks dressing.

I like the bread, cheese and ham but taste nicer than what i make for myself every morning, probably bcos i used low-fat cheese and boiled ham...

The Salmon is surprisingly fresh and seasoned nicely, but the egg is slightly over-cooked thou.

Kind of sick of Coffee Bean Breakfast already... recommendations please!!

Break-y at The Coffee Bean

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaves
I think that TCB & TL has done a wonderful job, by making their breakfast available all-day! I always wanted to eat their breakfast, but i am those kind who likes to make my own breakfast at home, so seldom have chance to eat breakfast outside! But since their breakfast is now all-day! It means that i can get to eat their breakfast as my lunch! haha!
The Tea - Free Flow before 11am

The Black Coffee or Kopi-o siu dai

Salmon with Egg sandwich (im sure this is not the right name...i cant rmb!)

This is damn good la, thick and quite fresh salmon fillings between the bread, and sunny side up in the hollow of the bread! Perfect Combi! The cranberry Salad that comes along with makes my day, a good one! :)

Egg Ben (the right name)

Above the layer of bread, is scrambled eggs with cheese and ham topped with slight dash of herbs, and some pepper to go along with it will be good. Its quite salty already due to the cheese and ham, so be wary, do not add the salt that was given! Cranberry salad to go along too!

More Breakfast!!!

anyway just rmb something, LJS breakfast is a big NONO!

Heartlander Macaroonsssss

Macaroons is a cross between cookies and confectionary, and originated from Italy.

According to legend, the macaroon was invented in an Italian monastery in 1792. Later, two Carmelite nuns, hiding in the town of Nancy during the French Revolution, baked and sold macaroons to cover their expenses. They became known as the "Macaroon Sisters." The cookie recipe was supposedly passed on to the Jewish community in France, who subsequently made it a staple of Passover baking. - Wikipedia

Enough of stories about macaroons! Bought a box of Macaroons from a shop in Toa Payoh ( near the station) ! A heartlander shop selling macaroons?! yes..its true and its good! The exterior is sugar coated, the Middle layer is chewy, and the butter cream is not too sweet, perfect! However, not all 5 flavours are fantastic.

Strawberry, Orange, Chocolate, Almond, Kiwi Flavoured?

MyFavourite to least Fav---> Chocolate, Almond, Strawberry, Orange, Kiwi---->

One-bite! and half is gone! Chocolate Best! more macaroonsssssss...
