Nonya Achar - 阿妈的最棒!

Looks can be deceiving... these are Achar contained in Adams... lol. This is what you can do with the dozens of bottles after buying dozens of Adams Peanut butter and eat dozens of them

This is seriously like the BEST Achar I ever came across man... made by my grandmother, even at a age of 70+, she is still whipping up nice Nonya dishes... :)

Nicely spiced, sweetness of the pineapples, coolness of the cucumber, crunchy cabbages, carrots shreds, topped with sesame seeds!

Not For Sale!

Rojak - Soon Heng

***WALL OF FAME***

Rojak with cuttlefish @ $2.
51 on the box? That's the queue number!

I used to grow up eating Rojak from this place wat before it is relocated to HDB. Before this, this stall located at a coffee shop at Blk 177 Toa Payoh Central, where you can find the very famous goreng pisang as well. Hence, my Rojak standard bar is pretty high, and ever since then, i have yet to try any rojak that is better or on par with this.

Getting a good packet of rojak in Singapore now needs queue number too! From the "queue" (actually the queue is invisible because of the number system, and everyone gets scattered everywhere), you can more or less anticipate this stall to whip up a at least decent packet of rojak. And yes, they do whip up very nice rojak for minimum of just $2.

Why is this nice then?!?

I think making rojak really needs skill and Soon Heng has it! The prawn psate sweetness is splendid and well-balanced, and the amount of peanut bits is so generous that the whole packet is just covered with it...*slurpz*, and the "You Tiao" is very crispy as well.

Come try it and add on to their every growing Queue! lol

Soya Bean Curd @ Hong Lim Foodcentre

This is one of my favorite stall for a nice hot bowl of Soya bean curd. You might find me strange, cos everyone is going for the smooooothest, sofftttest texture. Not that i want to be different, but I do find the not-so-smooth and not-so-soft ones appealing as well. I have tried the one at selegie, it was just so normal. Been to the geylang, not too bad either. But out of these 3, I still prefer this! But too bad, this uncle has a very bad location.

Nice undulating textured surface, with very strong taste of Soya! The strong soya taste is what I like the most! I must really emphasize the strong soya taste!!! On top of that, it only cost $0.60! or was it $0.80? hmm... I think its $0.60.

slurpz.

Chicken Rice not so Nice - Wee Nam Kee

After reading from some blog about this place, I decide to give it a try! So after my swim, My growling tummy got to tahan until I reach Novena! There are many blogs saying that this place serve one of the best chicken rice, some even say that this is the best in Singapore! A word too "big" to use i guess... Usually this place is very crowded in the evening, probably due to its good location and everyone is hungry after a day's work, and anything taste better when you are hungry...

The garlic paste looks good, I scooped some into my spoon and ate it... there's sesame oil fused in it.

Ahh.... Im hungry, why is the food not here yet??? So i drank the soup... Well the soup taste very "MSG friendly"! so there I am..slurping the soup away until the chicken rice arrives...

Chicken Rice is here! finally... waiting time about 10min on a non-peak afternoon. The rice is very different from other chicken rice outlets. You can see and feel the individual grains in your mouth as you chew on it... very chewy. I must say that the rice is one of the better ones I had so far...

4.4 Rice / 5.0 Rice

Lets zoom in to the Chicken! The chiken looks good on the picture, but it doesn't taste as good as it is. I like Hainanese Chicken whereby the meat is "cold", and the meat is not as tender as it should be... I should have eaten at The Yishun Chicken Rice after my swim. The $6.00 chicken rice is cheaper and nicer than this $9.40 Chicken Rice. (Price is for 2 person). The 40 cents is for the wet tissue.

3.8 Chicken / 5.0 Chicken

will i ever go back again? dun think so...

Handmade Yong Tau Hu @ Ang Mo Kio Hawker Centre

Wanted to eat my favourite Yong Tau Hu Stall, but then.... its not open for "Who knows?" reasons... so... not wanting to waste my trip down here... and still wanting to eat my healthy bowl of Yong Tau Hu, I surveyed the place and realised theres 2 more stall selling YTH too... out of randomness, i settled for the handmade one.

The difference between handmade Yong Tau Hu and the one i eaten earlier is that:

1. You cannot choose the ingredients
2. Standard Price vs variable price
3. You cannot ask for no noodles, which I sometimes do request
4. The Handmade YTH Stall has nicer chilli sauce!
5. The Handmade YTH stall has nicer noodles... mixed with the sauce and eat it... and you will end up finishing the whole bowl!
6. The Handmade YTH Tofu is sooo much softer

Overall, this stall is comparatively pretty good as well, just that it lacks the variety, but nevertheless, it scores in other areas as mentioned above. Worth a try!

Nice Duck Rice Alexandra Food Centre

The Stall is glistering with so many awards, plaques... very reflective lor the whole shop!
As a foodie we know that all these can be deceiving... only my unbiased tastebuds don't deceive you and me. If its bad i will sure KPKB...and you will be listed under my HALL OF SHAME. It it is good i will say its good la...and you will be under my HALL OF FAME... how interesting. lol.

ROASTED DUCK RICE - That is the name of the stall, in chinese, you read for yourself :) It is situated at the corner of the food centre, you won't missed it unless its closed or david copperfield happen to passby...

We interns ordered a plate of Roasted Duck and i requested for Char siews to be added on as well... This duck is quite unique in the sense that it is cut to very thin slices, and a lot of dark soy sauce mixed with their own secret sauce is drizzled over it, giving it a unique taste, but this also masked the "roasted smell".

The char siew is also thinly sliced, but i would prefer thicker slice for the texture and the chewiness. It is nicely caramelized, but it will be better if the dark sauce is not added to the char siew as the whole purpose in eating char siew is to enjoy the burnt caramelized surface of it... imo! la!

The rice is just normal rice.... nothing great... 3/4 of my rice was given to my friend... hehe... carbs...

Ok la.. they deserve the award, but it too oily lor... i suspect the dark sauce is added with tons of oil... see how glossy that plate of duck meat is... just like their awards...

Prawn Noodles @ Alexandra Food Centre

My internship has finally come to an end! Mixed feelings of both sadness, but more happiness! =D
Have loads of food pics which i took over the course of my intern lunch, but i have yet to upload! Actually not much also larh, cos most of the time im eating Yong Tau Huu! lol

Here's a late entry!

Soon Heng Prawn Noodles - they are close randomly on certain days... must be earning too much... tsk

Normal Prawn Noodle @ $3 - The soup base is one of the nicest prawn noodle soup i ever had! taste soooo "prawny". They are also quite generous with the amount of prawn and also cuts of lean pork meat. The winning factor for this is definitely the soup! The small prawns one is sold at $2.50 and $3.00 respectively.

Pork Rib Noodle - E ordered this. Look at the amount of pork ribs they give! I guess its good as well since he never complain!

Big Prawn Noodle @ $4 - I ordered this!

Just pay a dollar more and you can upgrade to big prawns! Everything taste pretty much the same, except that with bigger prawns, the shiok factor is higher! but the downside is, for an extra dollar, you have to do some de-shelling.

Zi Char from Jurong

My bro-in-law bought us so much food! My goodness... Bought from a supposedly famous "Zi Char" Stall, somewhere in jurong...

Steamed Promphet - Test like any normal promphet lor...

Seafood Egg Tofu - This good stuff has lots of seafood man... and those prawns are big... i always love big prawns! the bigger the better!

Black Pepper Crayfish - The crayfish taste like normal, and the black pepper will be better if its more pepperish!

Ngor Hiang - The Ngor Hiang is nice... crisp layer outside, but the meat filling is still wet and moist inside...

Hmm.. Fried Egg - but eggs are always nice.. at least to me...

Some Greens - Normal. Period.

Fried Chicken Wings/Drum Sticks - hmmm.. why no chicken breast one... but ok la... Prawn paste fried chicken drum sticks are nicer, this one is a bit too dry.

Pork Rib King - Oh yes... the pork rib king make me eat so much of it la... the sweet sauce is very special, and most imporantly, the meat is tender... very nice to chew chew and chew...

Deep Fried Sotong - Kind of difficult to eat leh... very tough and chewy... and your mouth gets tired after eating a few of this!

Cereal Prawns - I like it simply because the prawn is big!

Overall... pretty satisfying la... but its more of Quantity over Quality

I still prefer the previous Zi Char at Khatib

Pies and Tarts from Le Cafe

Cafe Le Pastry - I have passed by this place a couple of times whenever I visit Rochor Tau Huay (Bean Curd) Stall which is just a few shops away from here... but I nv took a second look at this shop, until today.

So many newspaper clippings, must be pretty good, and some bloggers actually gave a thumbs-up! My intent was to get the Bean Curd Tarts... which is similar to egg tarts, just that the filling is bean curd...

They are reputable for Tau Huay Tarts... but sadly...

The lady boss told us that they have ran out of stock, and we have to come another day! But as a consolation, we bought moon pies instead, after trying out samples given by them. The sample size was generous lor..unlike some stalls... so niao (Stingy). I also tried the brownie, which was pretty good, but there are better ones outside. The moon pie comes in 7 different flavour. (Anyway moon pies is quite similar to moon cake, with paste as its filling, but the skin is flaky). It comes in Coffee, Traditional, Salted, Yam, Green Tea, Red Bean etc... The paste is not too thick, but chewy and overall its pretty good... and it makes a good gift too esp they wrapped it up so nicely... hehe.

so we ordered the bean curd tarts... and come again the next day to collect it...

Bean Curd Tarts! True enough, the bean curd is smooth and silky, and the taste of bean curd is strong. I love it, my family love it.. all of us love it! one missing from the tray, cos its already in my tummy! haha!

Zi Char @ Khatib Station

I cannot remember the block number, but i will find out very soon! all I know is that it is very near khatib mrt station, and its very very delicious.

This is the Kopi Tiam, never judge the food by the appearance of the stall!

Claypot Tofu with Extra Egg

I merely just briefly mention to the auntie: "auntie more egg leh", and see what i got! Lots of eggs, so much that the eggs starts to bubble into bid spherical bubbles... and when you scoop away one part, the eggs will flow to cover that part... yummy! and they are generous with the prawns... big crunchy ones.

Nonya Fish

The gravy is very very nice... it taste sweet but yet spicy... and the gravy goes very well with your rice... someone like me who avoid carbs, actually managed to gobble down a bowl of rice with the gravy...keke. The fish is fresh... and portion is big! and cheap!

Sweet and Sour Pork Chops

Its surface is quite crisp, yet the inner is still thick and juicy and has a strong meaty taste... yet the sweet sauce only envelops the meat, thus keeping the meat taste as it is within...

Pea Shoots (Dou Miao)

Chilli Crabs

Don't expect something like Jumbo or no Signboard, but its good in its own kopi tiam zi char league... The crab is surprisingly fresh, and not under/over cooked, thus the meat remains chunky, and does not stick to the shell.

Butter Crabs

As compared to the chilli crabs, the butter crab fared better.. its still as fresh and chunk as the chilli version, but those yellow flossy things on the crab is very nice... its very oily too... i think its fried crab eggs if im not wrong... please correct me if im wrong... which im usually is.... lol

A fortunate Cat - A good sleep after eating so much leftovers from this zi char stall... It was almost motionless during my whole dinner, except a few flips here and there... lol
